I promise...

I promise I haven't forgotten about you! I don't have anything new to post right now, but there'll be new stuff soon! We are working on a sight word/word family tree in the hallway, and I hope to have pictures of that up really soon. In the mean time, can I just say I love my instructional assistants SO MUCH?! They are amazing :) Hope you had a good Monday...mine was wild, but hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Hope you are having a good week! Just wanted to check in and post a printable that my kids loved today! I used it with the whole class after introducing consonants and vowels. I thought it would be good for you to use either as a center or for your whole class (if you've got a small group like me). The kids wrote down the names of the children in their class (or small group, if that's what you're going to) and had to find the number of consonants and vowels in each person's name. Not only did they have to think about which letters were consonants and which were vowels, but they also had to count...which many of mine struggle with.
Anyway, here's the printable. Hope you and your kiddos enjoy it :)

Have a great week :)

Cadre Day!

Well, it was a cadre day today. I'm in lots of cadres. I guess it's kind of my thing. I really do enjoy learning about new and innovative instructional strategies that could work with my kids. It makes me feel like I'm in college again (I'd never thought I'd miss being a STUDENT in a classroom, but I was wrong...I can't wait to start my Master's in the spring)!
Sometimes, though, I just go downhill after the lunch break. I don't know what it is with me, but my brain just tunes out after a nice bowl of soup from Rafferty's. Well, that happened today...badly! I stayed and tried my best to pay attention, but my mind just wandered! It wandered to my little darlings that I was missing at school, and to the AMAZING instructional assistants who are taking great care of them. Then it wandered to my grocery list, that bill on my counter, and to my poodle. GEEZE, FOCUS MS. CAUDILL!!!
Anyway, the Autism Cadre (the cadre of the week ;) ) went pretty well, and we continue to work on maintaining a presence in our district in case we were ever needed by a teacher. Autism is my favorite disability (is it weird to have a favorite?) to learn about and to work with and I have found that it, more than any other disability, tests my teaching skills and pushes me to think of new ideas. I've got a brother with autism, so although I'm still pretty young I have 21 years of autism experience :) Ahhh, autism, my life would be ENTIRELY different without your presence.
Hope y'all have a GREAT Friday! If you are in Kentucky, look up the Constitution Square Arts Festival and come on down to my darlin' home town :)

ARRGH!!! continued

PS- I made a signature!!! :)

Ever have one of those days where you wonder, "Why am I doing this???" Well, today was one of those days! I kept thinking that SURELY there was a full moon tonight, because no way could things be this wild without one. Alas, the next full moon isn't until Monday (can't wait to see what Monday is like!) so it was just an off day I guess.
After my fun-filled school day, I had to go out to the dreaded car circle. Now, you'll probably hear me complain about the car circle a great deal, so I'll go ahead and introduce you to it. The Circle is where our car riders are picked up after school. While there are many different jobs that different members of special education/special area/intervention teachers have to work in, my job is a particularly "active" one. I am "lanes", meaning I have to go stand in the middle of our lanes of school traffic, write down car numbers as cars pull in, and call them in to the gym. The gym then matches number to child, and that child goes out to a certain cone where they will be picked up. Honestly, I don't HATE lanes as much as everyone else does. When it is raining (like today), though, that is a whole different story! Because I'm writing on a regular piece of paper, it won't work if I get it wet. So I have to carry a walkie talkie, umbrella, clipboard, and pen AND juggle them all. If only I had 4 arms ;) Actually, that would help me in several areas of my job.
ANYWAY, the Circle was just one big & wet mess today! All in all, I'm glad to be in the comfort of my own home with the comfort of my sweet poodle tonight. I'm off to my Autism Cadre with our local special ed coop tomorrow, so I'll get to take on a new kind of challenge tomorrow. That is one thing about teaching: it's NEVER boring! :)

My Newest Obsession (and a Printable)

OMG, I got an invite to Pinterest today and all I can say is WOW! Fabulous! I already have three boards and I'm obsessed. Between the fabulous Mrs. Carroll (the first blogger I stalked!) and several Pinterest-loving friends at school, I knew I'd be hooked quickly. It kind of scares me, too, because I spent so much time on there today!
Anyway, here is a printable for ya! I use it as a reader's response in my DEAR station (Drop Everything And Read). I've included two formats, one that has space for kids to write and one with space for kids to draw. Drawing is more appropriate for my students, but I don't know what would be most appropriate for yours. It also includes a little smiley for "like" or "didn't like". Hope you enjoy [click here]! :)

My First Post -- YIKES!

Lately, I've been so inspired by all the teacher bloggers out there. My lovely teaching buddy, Mrs. King, has inspired me to start my own blog! It is SUPER rusty right now...this Blogger stuff is a lot different than MySpace :)
I decided to call my blog "Special Speckled Eggs" because a dear friend of mine who also happens to be a teacher of exceptional students calls all her exceptional educator friends "Speckled Eggs". Too cute! Makes you think of the widely used (albeit outdated) term "Special Ed", but in a fun way :)
I'll be reading up on how to make my blog look a little nicer in the next few days, so hopefully it'll start looking a lot more professional this week. Come back soon for some pictures of what I'm doing in my classroom. Hope everyone enjoys their Labor Day vacation by doing absolutely NO labor at all :)
